Volleyball Falls At No. 17 Wingate

WINGATE - No. 17 Wingate hit .273 from the net and committed just 12 attack errors on the way to a 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-17) sweep over the UNC Pembroke volleyball team on Thursday night inside Cuddy Arena for the Bulldog Invitational.

The Braves (0-1) hit just .118 from the net and committed 17 attack errors. The Bulldogs (1-0) improve to 31-7 all-time against UNCP.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 25-21 The first set saw a competitive start, with the teams trading points early on. UNC Pembroke briefly pulled ahead with a 7-5 lead, highlighted by a series of errors from the Bulldogs, but Wingate responded swiftly, tying the score at 9-9 thanks to a service ace by Maya Van Heyst. The Bulldogs then gained momentum, building a 22-19 lead fueled by consistent kills from Gabby Saye and Abby Mas. Despite a timeout from the Braves, Wingate maintained their pace, closing the set 25-21 with a decisive kill by Emily Johnson.
SET 2 I 25-17 UNC Pembroke gained an early advantage through a service ace by Savannah Whaley, taking a 2-0 lead. Wingate quickly responded, and a series of errors by both teams kept the score close. Rylee Tanner's strong service game propelled the Bulldogs with a streak, including a service ace and two kills, giving Wingate a 7-4 lead. Wingate continued to capitalize on errors, extending their lead to 13-6. Despite a brief push by the Braves to close the gap to 13-10, the Bulldogs maintained control with a 5-0 run. Wingate secured the set victory at 25-17, closing with a kill by Gabby Saye.
SET 3 I 25-17 Wingate seized control quickly taking a 6-0 lead highlighted by kills from Gabby Saye and Abby Mas and a service ace from Maddie Hoffman. McKenna Hayes delivered a kill to put the Braves on the board and stop the WU surge. The Braves managed a late push with a service ace from Abby Peduzzi and a kill by Savannah Whaley, but Wingate closed out the set 25-17 following consecutive kills from Emily Johnson and Rylee Tanner.
