Men's Basketball Holds Off Chowan

PEMBROKE – Chowan's Damerius Summer's knocked down a three-pointer with 12 seconds left to cut the deficit to one point, but Sean Burress, Jr. made a pair of free throws seconds later to key an 85-82 victory for the UNC Pembroke men's basketball team on Wednesday evening at Bob Burke Court.

The Braves (9-6, 6-1 CC) have won their last three games and improve to 4-2 when playing on the road this season. The setback for the Hawks (8-9, 6-3 CC) snapped a two game win streak and fall to 5-9 when playing UNCP.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
UNC Pembroke and Chowan opened their matchup with a tightly contested first half, culminating in a narrow 42-40 lead for Chowan. Moe Bangura set the tone early for the Braves with two successful free throws, while Dallas Whitney and Sean Burress Jr. maintained scoring pressure with key layups. Chowan's Markell Hollis contributed significantly, hitting a crucial three-pointer at the 11:17 mark and adding a jumper shortly after. The half concluded dramatically as Joseph Lezeau II sank a jumper with just two seconds remaining, giving the Hawks a slight 42-40 edge heading into the break.
2ND HALF
UNC Pembroke outscored Chowan 45-40 in the second half to finish with an 85-82 win. The half saw a series of key plays, including a decisive 3-pointer by Nygell Verdier at the 1:25 mark, putting the Braves ahead 81-76. Sean Burress Jr. contributed crucial free throws in the final seconds, maintaining their lead despite a late 3-pointer by Damerius Summers for Chowan, which brought them within one point of a tie. Throughout the half, Jonathan Kurtas and Joe'l Pettiford made significant impacts in the paint, helping the Braves maintain their edge.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Sean Burress, Jr. finished with a career-high 18 points on a 4-for-6 shooting performance. Burress was a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line and pulled down five rebounds in 31 minutes of work.
+ Nygell Verdier added a dozen points after going 4-for-9 from the floor. The redshirt senior pulled down two rebounds and had one assist. 
+ Joe'l Pettiford came off of the bench to register 11 points after shooting 5-for-6 from the field. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 49.1 percent from the field while Chowan shot 47.5 percent from the floor. 
+ Chowan scored 16 points from 12 UNCP turnovers. 
+ The Black & Gold went 25-for-33 from the free throw line, while the Hawks were just 19-for-27.

+ The Braves posted a 37-28 advantage in rebounds,while also holding a 15-11 edge on the offensive glass.

The Braves will trek to Due West, S.C. on Saturday to face Erskine. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. at Belk Arena.
