Men's Basketball Stays Hot, Downs Barton

WILSON – Nygell Verdier and Moe Bangura each scored a career-high 26 points as the UNC Pembroke men's basketball team shot 56.3 percent from the field to help fuel an 85-70 victory over Barton on Wednesday evening inside Wilson Gymnasium.  

The Braves (13-6, 10-1 CC) push their win streak out to 10 games and have won the last four meetings with Barton. The setback for the Bulldogs (8-12, 6-6 CC) snapped a three-game win streak and are now 5-5 when playing at home this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
The game opened with UNC Pembroke taking an early lead as Jonathan Kurtas scored a layup 30 seconds into the contest. Barton responded with a layup and free throw from Isaiah Davis to five the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead. The score remained tight, with both teams exchanging baskets, including a 3-pointer by Jaylen Faber for BC at the 16:10 mark to give the hosts a 12-8 advantage. Late in the first half, a crucial steal by Dallas Whitney led to a 3-pointer by Demar Anderson putting the Braves ahead 39-38 at the buzzer to send the teams to the locker rooms.
2ND HALF
UNC Pembroke extended their lead early in the second half, with Jonathan Kurtas opening the scoring with a jumper to push ahead 41-38. Sean Burress Jr. and Moe Bangura added layups, contributing to a 9-2 run that pushed the lead out to 49-40 at the 16:53 mark. Barton struggled to keep pace, with Caleb Reams hitting a three-pointer with 16:17 on the clock to reduce the deficit to 51-44. However, Nygell Verdier's consistent scoring, including a three-pointer and a fastbreak layup, helped the visiting team maintain control. The Braves outscored Barton 46-32 in the half, securing an 85-70 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Moe Bangura finished with a career-high 26 points on a 6-for-8 clip from the field and 13-for-16 showing from the free throw line. The Lorton, Va., native grabbed three rebounds, had a trio of assists and two steals in 33 minutes of work.
+ Senior Nygell Verdier posted a double-double with a career-best 26 points on a 9-for-16 clip from the field. Verdier pulled down 1o rebounds, while adding three assists and one steal in 39 minutes of action. 
+ Demar Anderson came off of the bench to add a dozen points and two assists. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 56.3 percent from the field and held Barton to 38.5-percent shooting. It was the lowest shooting performance from Barton since shooting 20.7 percent from the floor against Francis Marion on Jan. 13. 
+ The Black & Gold finished 26-of-42 from the free throw line while the Bulldogs were 23-of-36. 
+ UNCP held the lead for 51.2 percent of Wednesday's victory. 
+ The Braves posted a 34-22 advantage with points in the paint. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will travel to Tigerville, S.C., on Saturday to lock horns with North Greenville. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. inside Hayes Gymnasium.
