Ferrum Uses Buzzer Beater To Knock Off Men's Basketball

FERRUM, Va. – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball team held a one-point lead following a layup from Nygell Verdier with 13 seconds remaining, but a layup with two seconds on the clock from Gerren Jones helped Ferrum to a 65-64 victory over the Braves on Wednesday evening inside Swartz Gymnasium. 

The setback for the Braves (15-7, 12-2 CC) snapped a nine game win streak and marked just the third loss on the road this season. The Panthers (15-8, 13-4 CC) have now won their last three games and improve to 10-1 when playing at home this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
Sean Burress, Jr. initiated the scoring with a tip-in at 19:26, setting an early pace for UNC Pembroke. Dallas Whitney contributed significantly, hitting a 3-pointer at 18:29, but Ferrum's Gerren Jones was active, scoring a 3-pointer at 17:16 and converting free throws minutes later to edge the Panthers ahead 20-14. Moe Bangura tied the game at 21 with a layup with just under five minutes left to play in the half, However, Jonathan Kurtas clinched the half for UNC Pembroke with a layup at the buzzer to send the teams to the locker rooms with UNCP leading 27-25. 
2ND HALF
The half began with Moe Bangura capitalizing on a Ferrum turnover with a layup pushing the UNC Pembroke lead out to 29-25. Rodrigo Farias quickly responded with a 3-pointer, putting the Panthers ahead 30-29. Dallas Whitney's consistent free-throw shooting and a 3-pointer at the 16:43 mark kept the game tied at multiple intervals. As the game progressed, both teams exchanged leads, with neither managing to pull away decisively. Nygell Verdier made good on a layup with 13 seconds remaining to put UNCP ahead 64-63, but a layup by Gerren Jones with just two seconds left secured a narrow 65-64 victory for Ferrum.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Moe Bangura finished with team-best 16 points on a 6-for-8 shooting performance. The senior grabbed three rebounds in 31 minutes of work.
+ Nygell Verdier added 15 points on a 6-for-16 clip from the field while pulling down eight rebounds. 
+ Dallas Whitney made a trio of triples to add 13 points, while Jonathan Kurtas finished with team-best 10 rebounds. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 48.0 percent from the field while Ferrum finished the game shooting 42.3 percent from the floor.
+ The Panthers went 18-for-24 from the free throw line, while the Braves finished Wednesday's game going 13-for-26 from the charity stripe.
+ The Black & Gold outscored Ferrum 40-28 with points in the paint. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will host Southern Wesleyan on Saturday for Coaches vs. Cancer and Alumni Day. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
