Men's Basketball Edges Southern Wesleyan In Double Overtime

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball team scored 60 points in the paint and shot 50-percent from the field to help highlight a 113-110 double overtime victory over Southern Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 

The Braves (16-7, 13-2 CC) have now won the last six meetings against Southern Wesleyan and improve to 8-4 on the season when playing in Pembroke. The setback for the Warriors (10-13, 7-9 CC) snapped a three game win streak and fall to 1-9 when playing on the road.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
The game began with UNC Pembroke's Moe Bangura scoring a layup just 18 seconds into the first half. Southern Wesleyan quickly responded with a three-pointer from Malachi Cooper, setting the tone for a back-and-forth contest. Josh Parker's three-point shot at 18:19 and Will Little's jumper at 17:55 allowed the Warriors to gain an early lead. However, UNC Pembroke's Nygell Verdier and Joe'l Pettiford contributed crucial points in the paint, helping their team to pull ahead. As the half concluded, Dallas Whitney hit a jumper with 30 seconds remaining, securing a 47-39 lead for the Braves.
2ND HALF
In a tightly contested second half, Southern Wesleyan managed to edge out UNC Pembroke, 45-37, to tie the game at 84 at the end of regulation. Cooper played a decisive role, scoring a jumper with 19 seconds remaining to secure a brief lead. Nygell Verdier responded by hitting both free throws with just two seconds left, leveling the score. Key contributions from Jaquay Randolph, who added crucial free throws, and Little, who consistently scored in the paint, kept Southern Wesleyan within striking distance, setting the stage for a dramatic finish.
OVERTIME
Quay Watson hit a crucial 3-pointer at the 4:20 mark to give UNC Pembroke a slight edge, but Southern Wesleyan responded with free throws from Randolph and a jumper by Little to regain the lead. Watson's two successful free throws at 2:49 tied and then pushed the Braves ahead. Dallas Whitney contributed a layup, but Little's subsequent free throws tied the game again at 91. Both teams struggled to score in the final minute, with missed shots from both sides leaving the first overtime period tied at 91.
DOUBLE OVERTIME
Quay Watson played a pivotal role, tying the game at 93 with a layup at 4:30 and later converting crucial free throws in the final seconds. Dallas Whitney contributed a go-ahead three-pointer at 4:02, and Nygell Verdier added key points with a layup and jumper to maintain the lead. Josh Parker of the Warriors kept the game tense, hitting a three-pointer with 21 seconds remaining and scoring eight points in the final minute, but it was not enough to overcome the UNCP late game execution. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Quay Watson finished with a career-high 27 points and went 7-for-11 from the field. Watson also went 10-for-10 from the free throw line with three rebounds and two steals in 33 minutes of work.
+ Moe Bangura added 20 points on a 9-for-14 shooting night. The redshirt senior grabbed six rebounds in 36 minutes of work.
+ Redshirt senior Nygell Verdier posted a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Verdier finished with a team-high four steals and dished out one assist. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 50.0 percent from the field while Southern Wesleyan shot 52.9 percent from the floor. 
+ The Braves posted a 64-30 advantage with points in the paint. 
+ UNCP also held a 46-38 advantage in rebounds and outscored SWU 29-8 in second chance points.
+ Southern Wesleyan finished the game going 27-for-34 from the free throw line, while UNC Pembroke went 23-for-30. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will be back in action on Monday when they host Lees-McRae. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at Lumbee Guarnaty Bank Court.
