Men's Basketball Breezes By Lees-McRae

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball team shot 49.2 percent from the field and picked up 48 points from its bench on the way to an 81-67 victory over Lees-McRae on Monday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 

The Braves (17-7, 14-2 CC) improve to 10-2 all-time against Lees-McRae and have won the last two meetings of the series. The setback for the Bobcats (9-16, 6-11 CC) marked their fourth conseuctive loss and fall to 2-9 when playing on the road this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
The game opened with a quick steal by Moe Bangura, leading to two successful free throws that gave the Braves an early lead. The Bobcats responded with a 3-pointer by Yerald Mieses to edge ahead. The teams exchanged the lead several times throughout the half, with Mieses and Nigel Okwakol contributing significantly for the Bobcats. UNC Pembroke's Joe'l Pettiford made an impact with multiple offensive rebounds and points in the paint, helping to secure a slight advantage. The half concluded with a highlight dunk by Tahj Johnson and a layup by Quay Watson, giving the Braves a 34-28 edge heading into the break.
2ND HALF
UNC Pembroke extended its lead in the second half, beginning with a 3-pointer by Dallas Whitney at the 19:45 mark. Lees-McRae attempted to close the gap with Cedric Patterson's three consecutive free throws, narrowing the margin to 43-36 at 15:53. However, the Braves maintained control, with Nygell Verdier contributing a layup at 9:13 to push the lead to 57-46. Late in the half, Quay Watson's free throws at the 31-second mark cemented a decisive 81-67 victory for the Braves.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Joe'l Pettiford posted his fourth double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. The redshirt senior went 6-for-10 from the field in just 18 minutes of work.
+ Quay Watson came off of the bench to finish with a game-high 19 points. The sophomore was a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line and pulled down four defensive rebounds. 
+ Nygell Verdier flirted with a double-double with 11 points and eight defensive rebounds. The Charlotte native finished with two steals and two assists. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 49.2 percent from the field while Lees-McRae shot 44.4 percent from the floor. 
+ The Black & Gold posted a 52-26 advantage with points in the paint. 
+ UNCP also tallied 48 from its bench compared to 22 bench points from LMC.
+ The Braves held a 41-22 advantage in rebounds and registered 16 second chance points. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Mount Olive for Tribe Night. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
