Men's Basketball Battles By Mount Olive

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball team scored 26 points in transition and tallied 37 points from its bench on the way to an 85-72 victory over Mount Olive on Wednesday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 

The Braves (18-7, 15-2 CC) have now won their last six home games and have won the last 10 meetings with Mount Olive. The Trojans (9-16, 6-11 CC) have now lost their last three games and fall to 3-7 when playing on the road.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
Moe Bangura of UNC Pembroke made good on a layup to establish an early lead. Mount Olive answered quickly with a three-pointer by Redford Dunton. UNC Pembroke extended its advantage through effective fast breaks, including a sequence where Nygell Verdier capitalized on a steal by Sean Burress, Jr. to score a layup at 18:32. The teams traded leads throughout the half, but UNCP picked up 17 points from its bench in the half helping them secure a 39-32 lead as the teams headed to the locker rooms.
2ND HALF
Nygell Verdier knocked down a 3-pointer at 18:17 and a fastbreak dunk at 12:13 to push the UNCP lead out to 56-43.  Alston scored a three-pointer to keep the Trojans within reach, but the UNC Pembroke strong defense, including a block by Sean Burress, Jr. at 2:48, solidified their advantage. Despite a late push from Mount Olive, including a fastbreak dunk by Christian Ananaba with 42 seconds remaining, UNC Pembroke secured an 85-72 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Nygell Verdier finished with a game-high 17 points on a 7-for-14 shooting performance. Verdier pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, while adding two blocks, one steal and one assist in 29 minutes of work.
+ Quay Watson turned in 14 points on a 5-for-10 shooting night. Watson added two rebounds and two assists. 
+ Moe Bangura went 5-for-11 from the floor to add 13 points. The Lorton, Va., native finished with six rebounds and one block. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 47.7 percent from the field while Mount Olive shot 42.1 percent from the floor. 
+ The Braves scored 12 points 10 Mount Olive turnovers.
+ The Black & Gold committed just four turnovers. It was the fewest turnovers committed in a game since Feb. 26, 2020.
+ UNCP held a 26-11 advantage with points in transition and picked up 37 points from its bench.
