Men's Basketball Rallies, Defeats Shorter

ROME, Ga. – Shorter scored 27 points from 20 UNC Pembroke turnovers, but a late 25-2 run from the Braves helped seal a 79-67 victory over the Hawks on Saturday afternoon inside the Winthrop-King Centre. 

The Braves (19-7, 16-2 CC) picked up 23 second chance points and have now won their last four contests. The setback for the Hawks (9-16, 7-11 CC) snapped a two game winning streak and have now lost seven out of their last nine games.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
The game opened with UNC Pembroke taking an early lead as Jonathan Kurtas tipped in a missed layup just 19 seconds into play. Sean Burress, Jr. extended the lead with a three-pointer at 19:02, making it 5-0. Shorter responded with a layup from Chris Bibbs at 17:48 to narrow the gap. As the half progressed, both teams exchanged leads with Ja'Myas Davis contributing significantly for the Hawks, including a layup at 7:41 followed by a free throw to stretch their lead. The half concluded dramatically with Shorter's Jalien Bush hitting a three-pointer with four seconds left, closing the half at 40-34 in favor of the Hawks.
2ND HALF
UNC Pembroke overcame an early deficit to secure a 79-67 victory over Shorter in the second half. Davis started the half with a layup for the Hawks, but UNC Pembroke's Nygell Verdier quickly responded with a 3-pointer. Midway through the half, Bibbs extended Shorter's lead with a layup and a 3-pointer, helping to push the score to 49-39. However, the Braves mounted a strong comeback led by Moe Bangura and Sean Burress, Jr., with Burress, Jr. contributing crucial layups, including one at the 3:56 mark to take a 66-65 lead. Moe Bangura's late-game dunk sealed the win as UNC Pembroke outscored Shorter by 18 points in the half.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Moe Bangura went 8-for-12 from the field to finish with a team-high 20 points. The redshirt senior posted a double-double with 11 rebounds, while adding one assist and one steal in 23 minutes of work.
+ Jonathan Kurtas turned in a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Kurtas dished out two assists, two steals and one block playing 31 minutes on Saturday. 
+ Sean Burress, Jr., finished with 13 points while shooting 5-for-8 from the field. The newcomer grabbed four defensive rebounds and recorded three steals. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 45.9 percent from the field, while Shorter shot 49.1 percent from the floor. 
+ The Black & Gold pulled down 48 rebounds and held the Hawks to 21 rebounds. 
+ The Braves registered 18 offensive rebounds, and picked up 23 second chance points. 
+ Shorter scored 27 points from 20 UNC Pembroke turnovers. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will play their final road contest of the regular season on Monday when they travel to Tigersville, S.C. to face North Greenville. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. inside Hayes Gymnasium.
