Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader And Series Against Barton On Senior Day

PEMBROKE – UNC Pembroke jumped out to an early lead on the way to an 11-2 win in Game 1 of the doubleheader, and then rallied from a 6-1 deficit with runs in the final five innings to take a 9-8 walk-off win in the finale to complete the series sweep of Barton on Senior Day to close out the regular season Saturday at Sammy Cox Field.

Jackson Crute stayed hot at the plate, collecting three hits in each end of the doubleheader, including the walk-off single in the nightcap. CW Bayer had his 13-inning scoreless streak snapped, but still managed to pick up the win in Game 1, while Taylor Batten picked up his second win of the week in Game 2 with a scoreless inning out of the bullpen.

The Braves (32-16, 21-12 CC) improved to 49-55 all-time against the Bulldogs (10-32, 7-26 CC), and now have won eight of the last ten matchups against Barton.

UNCP earned the No. 5 seed in the upcoming Conference Carolinas Tournament, and will take on No. 4 seed Young Harris on Thursday, April 30 at Sims Legion Park. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
BOT 1 The Braves jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead on RBI doubles from Branton Jernigan and Jackson Crute, while Morgan Padgett followed with a two-run oppo boppo.
BOT 2 UNCP posted another four-run inning to put the game out of reach, as Daniel Stephens and Crute each drove in a pair with singles to stretch the lead to 8-0.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 2 Barton struck first on a Blake Kolesnik sac fly to jump ahead 1-0.
BOT 2 Crute led off with a double and eventually came home on Padgett's sac fly to knot the score at 1-1.
TOP 5 After the Bulldogs scored a pair in the fourth inning, Vincent Santostefano gave Barton a 6-1 lead with a three-run home run.
BOT 6 After an RBI single from Crute in the fifth inning, the Braves would cut the deficit to 6-5 as Tyler Steele provided an RBI groundout, Stephens scored another with a sac fly, before Jernigan capped off the inning with an RBI double.
TOP 7 Santostefano struck again, this time for a two-run homer to stretch the Barton lead to 8-5. 
BOT 7 The Black & Gold once again cut into the deficit, using an RBI single from Padgett and a Steele sac fly to make it 8-7.
BOT 8 Mason Mozeley singled and advanced 90 feet on a Barton error to extend the inning, with Boone Herman tying the game with a two-strike RBI double to score pinch-runner Dylan Hubbard.
BOT 9 Padgett worked a leadoff walk as Kasen McCawley came in to pinch run. Steele's groundout moved McCawley up 90 feet, before Stephens walked and Landon Lucas reached on an infield single to load the bases. After Barton got a strikeout, Crute delivered the final blow with a single to right center to walk it off.
