Volleyball Wraps Up Shark Invitational With A Split

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – UNC Pembroke hit .250, including a season-high .321 in the second set on the way to a 3-0 sweep of Middle Georgia in the first match of the day, but fell 3-1 to Nova Southeastern for the second day in a row to close out the Shark Invitational on Saturday.

Danika Kunkle logged a match-high 12 kills in the win over Middle Georgia, while Tyler Patterson and Emily Collings each recorded a double-double in the loss to Nova Southeastern.

UNCP (1-3) won the very first meeting against Middle Georgia, and fell to 1-5 all time against Nova Southeastern.

SET 1 I 25-19 The set was deadlocked at 13-13 before Danika Kunkle's kill gave the Braves the lead for good. 
    - UNCP out-hit MGA .267 to .212 in the set.
    - Kunkle led the way with five kills and an ace, while Abby Peduzzi chipped in with three kills.
SET 2 I 25-14 UNCP jumped out to an 8-1 lead and never looked back, leading by as many as 15 points at 24-9.
    - UNCP out-hit MGA .321 to .050 in the set.
    - Peduzzi had the hot hand, tallying five kills, while Kunkle and Alexandria Mills each logged three.
    - The Black & Gold also recorded five service aces, including two apiece from Kunkle and Peduzzi.
SET 3 I 25-23 Middle Georgia took a 15-9 lead before six straight points gave the Braves a 16-15 lead. The Knights would jump back ahead 23-22, but three straight points from the Braves sealed the match. A kill from Kunkle got UNCP to match point and Emily Collings closed it out with a service ace. 
    - UNCP out-hit MGA .186 to .146 in the set.
    - Kunkle logged four more kills and an ace, while Peduzzi added three kills.

SET 1 I 22-25 The Braves fought back from a 20-15 deficit to knot the game at 22-22, but three straight points from the Sharks closed out the set.
    - NSU out-hit UNCP .306 to .135 in the set.
    - Alexandria Mills, Abby Peduzzi, Addie Decker, and Danika Kunkle each logged two kills.
SET 2 I 29-27 UNCP controlled the set early, jumping out to a 14-9 lead. The Braves would lead 24-20 before four straight NSU points tied it at 24-24. UNCP fought off set point at 26-25 with a kill from Addie Decker, before NSU would tie it once more at 27-27. A kill from Mills got the Braves to set point, and then closed out the set with a solo block from Mills to knot the match at 1-1.
    - UNCP out-hit NSU .280 to .172 in the set.
    - Kunkle and Addie Decker led the way with four kills apiece.
    - Mills tallied three block assists, two kills, and a solo block.
SET 3 I 9-25 NSU rattled off 11 straight points to take a 17-3 lead to and never looked back.
    - NSU out-hit UNCP .389 to -.030 in the set.
    - Peduzzi recorded two kills.
SET 4 I 19-25 A block by Ava Fadool and Mills cut the deficit to 13-11, but NSU scored six of the next eight points to take a 19-13 lead. Peduzzi's kill made it 22-19, but the Sharks took the final three points to close out the match.
    - NSU out-hit UNCP .302 to .227 in the set.
    - Peduzzi tallied four kills with Kunkle adding three.

The Braves will be back in action Friday, September 4 for their home opener as they host the UNC Pembroke Invitational. UNCP is set to take on Virginia State (1 p.m.) and Embry-Riddle (5 p.m.) on Friday, and will close out the invitational Saturday at 3 p.m. against Middle Georgia.
