Football Hands No. 9 Valdosta State First Setback

PEMBROKE - The UNC Pembroke football team used a big fourth quarter on the way to a 44-41 victory over ninth-ranked Valdosta State on Saturday afternoon at Grace P. Johnson Stadium. 

It was the first loss of the season for the Blazers. UNCP has now defeated Valdosta State in the last three meetings, all of which were against ranked VSU teams. The Braves improve to 4-1 all-time against VSU.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Rashad Dockery moved the ball down the field with a 23-yard run, followed by a four-yard run. Malik Brown punched it into the endzone for the first score of the game. (UNCP 7-0)

Champ Harris got Valdosta State to the 50-yard line with an 18-yard run, then connected with Samuel Curry III for a 14-yard reception. Shawn Paschall beat the UNCP defense for a 36-yard touchdown. (7-7)
2ND QUARTER
The Blazers marched down the field with four consecutive plays to get to the UNCP 25-yard line. Justin Franklin connected with Joel Houedenou for a 27-yard touchdown. (VSU 14-7)
Valdosta State took over after the Braves went three and out, but Shawn Pashcall got things started quickly for the Blazers with a 45-yard run. Champ Harris connected with Jaheim Arnold for a 17-yard touchdown.  (VSU 21-7)

Josh Ehrlich found an open Malik Brown for a 65-yard run get the Braves into the Valdosta State's territory. The Braves were stopped offensively, but Jared Navidad made good on a 25-yard field goal. (VSU 21-10)


Valdosta State's Julias Pascal picked off a pass from Josh Ehrlich for a 94-yard touchdown. (VSU 27-10)

Avery Curtis returned the kickoff 22-yards to start the UNCP offense. Josh Ehrlich completed a pass to Logan Cook for 22-yards, followed by a 29-yard connection to DonNez Alford. Jake Davids pushed his way into the endzone for a UNCP touchdown. (VSU 27-17)

The Braves forced the Blazers to punt, and Josh Ehrlich and Avery Curtis connected for a gain of 47-yards. Ehrlich took matters into his own hands and ran up the middle for a gain of 20-yards, but the Black & Gold settled for a 36-yard field goal from Jared Navidad. (VSU 27-20)
3RD QUARTER
UNCP moved the ball down the field, but Jared Navidad knocked down a 32-yard field goal.  (VSU 27, UNCP 23)
4TH QUARTER
The Braves took over on their own 20-yard line after a botched field goal from Valdosta State heading into the fourth quarter. Josh Ehrlich found an open Jonathan Barnett for a touchdown. (UNCP 30-27)  

Valdosta State returned the kickoff for 52-yards but a 37-yard completion from Champ Harris to Jaheim Arnold put the Blazers back on top. (VSU 34-30)

Jake Davids broke through the VSU defense for a 53-yard run. Josh Ehrlich connected with DonNez Alford for a 22-yard touchdown. (UNCP 37-34)

Britton Pascoe intercepted a pass from Champ Harris for a 20-yard return and get the offense started on the Valdosta State 17-yard line. Josh Ehrlich found Jackson Karcher for a gain of 11-yards before Ehrlich ran the ball into the endzone for a six-yard touchdown. (UNCP 44-34)

Champ Harris completed a 13-yard pass to Justin Franklin, but Shawn Pashcall got through the defense for a 45-yard touchdown. (UNCP 44-41)
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Josh Ehrlich completed 16 of his 32 passing attempts for 285 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran the ball 20 times for 100 yards and one touchdown. 
+ Jake Davids carried the ball five times for 87 yards and a touchdown. 
+ Malik Brown caught three passes for 91 yards. 
+ Jadin Baptist finished the game with nine tackles, six of which were solo tackles. He had a pair of tackles ofr a loss of eight yards. 
+ Jared Navidad was a perfect 3-for-3 on field goal attempts, including a 36-yard attempt. 
NOTABLES
+UNC Pembroke finished Saturday's game with 542 total yards of offense while Valdosta State finished with 446 yards of offense.
+ The Braves have now won the last two meetings against the Blazers, both of which VSU was ranked during those contests. 
+ The Black & Gold won the time of possession 38:22 to 20:39.

The Braves will return to action on Saturday when they host Monroe for Parents and Families Weekend presented by Zaxby's. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Grace P. Johnson Stadium.
