CHARLESTON, S.C. – Freshman Christian McLean won seven matches, including six in the consolation bracket, to grab third place honors in the heavyweight tournament and highlight action for the UNC Pembroke wrestling team at the The Citadel Open on Saturday in the McAlister Field House.
McLean, who was competing in the tournament as an unattached entry, registered five pins on the day to highlight his run, including four first-period pins. McLean is redshirting for the Braves this year after winning the state title as a prep senior last season.
A total of 10 UNCP wrestlers finished the day with multiple victories, including newcomer Dakota Roberts who registered a 4-2 clip in the 165-pound tournament. Jake Smith (133 pounds), Reggie Allen (157), Joe Remaklus (157), Hayden Smith (165) and Ridge White (174) all finished the day with 3-2 records.
UNCP will lift the lid on its 2013-14 home schedule on Saturday when it plays host to the 33rd Annual Pembroke Classic in the English E. Jones Center. Wrestling action is set to get underway at 9 a.m.
