ROME, Ga. – Jake Smith (133 pounds) and newcomer Terrence Zaleski (174) each fell in the championship bout of their respective tournaments, Christian McLean (285) finished third and Juan Stimpson (165) and Jordan Ford (174) each grabbed fourth place showings, to highlight action for the UNC Pembroke wrestling team on Saturday at the Shorter Open.
The showing marked the second time this season that the Braves have placed at least five wrestlers at an event and the most since sending 10 to the podium at the 33rd Annual Pembroke Classic on November 9. The showing marked the third place-winner finish of the season for McLean and the fourth career place-winner finish for Smith. Jordan Ford and Terrence Zaleski each earned their first career trip to the podium with their performances.
Nine student-athletes recorded at least two victories on the day. McLean turned in a team-best five wins – the second time this season he has recorded five or more wins at an event – while Ford and Stimpson each accumulated a quartet triumphs. Smith, Zaleski, Casey Malloy and Dakota Roberts all turned in three wins.
The Braves will be back in action again on Sunday when the squad makes the short trip to Raleigh to take part in the Wolfpack Duals. UNCP will open the day at noon with a dual meet against Lindsey Wilson. The Braves are also scheduled to battle both Gardner-Webb (1:30 p.m.) and host-NC State (3 p.m.).
