Men's Soccer Battles North Georgia To A 2-2 Double Overtime Deadlock

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Senior Josh Phelps and freshman Jordan Walshaw lit up the scoreboard for the UNC Pembroke men's soccer team with a pair of goals in the first stanza, but North Georgia collected a score in the first 10 minutes and the Equalizer with four seconds left in regulation as the teams battled to a 2-2 stalemate on Saturday afternoon at UNG Soccer Complex in Peach Belt Conference action.

The draw helped UNCP (4-5-2, 1-3-2 PBC) snap a three-game losing streak, while North Georgia (3-8-2, 2-3-1) collected its first draw in league play.

Walshaw put the Braves on the board first with his third goal of the season at the 4:07 mark as he passed back and forth with Phelps for a 20-yard shot from the left side. Less than six minutes later, a hand ball inside the box allowed the Nighthawks to set up for the penalty kick which drew the game even at 1-1.

In the 29th minute, Phelps received the assist from Walshaw for a header off the corner kick for his fourth goal on the season which gave the Braves the lead until the 89:56 mark when a header by North Georgia's Ivan Acimovic sent the contest into overtime.

Sophomore Kenneth Perkinson collected eight saves between the pipes and faced 30 shots. Diego Casillas and Victor Ohlin split time in goal for the Nighthawks as both keepers picked up three saves and Ohlin allowed the pair of scores.

Phelps and Walshaw led the Braves with five shots apiece, while Tom Potter notched four and Izzy Evans contributed one to total 15 shots for the Black and Gold. Irving Salgado and Acimovic each had five shots as North Georgia out-shot UNCP with 30 total shots.

The Nighthawks posted six shots in the overtime periods, but were left wanting as a pair of saves and blocks denied a game-winning score. The two squads combined for 35 fouls as the Braves suffered a pair of yellow cards.

The Black and Gold will remain on the road with a Wednesday matchup against Barton (1-8-1) in Wilson. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Barton Outdoor Athletics Complex.
