PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke volleyball team combined for 33 blocks and a trio of service aces on the night, but visiting Georgia College proved to be too much as the Bobcats thwarted the Braves by a 3-1 (25-19, 21-25, 25-18, 25-18) count on Friday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
The setback marked the second-straight loss for the Braves (4-16, 1-7 PBC) who fell to 2-3 all-time against Georgia College. It was the third win in the last four outings for the Bobcats (9-7, 4-4).
Nicole Mathews tallied 10 kills and 14 digs to register her 11th double-double of the season and pace the attack for the Braves, while Ka'asha Jefferies grabbed 28 digs on the defensive side of the ball for the hosts. Brittani Jefferson accumulated a team-best 10 blocks (9 assists) for the Black & Gold as well.
Carolina Long turned in a match-best 16 kills to pave the way for the Georgia College offense, while Kayla Brock logged a match-best 42 assists.
UNCP hit .000 in the opening set, but fought back from a five-point deficit to knot the score up at 16 apiece before Georgia College closed it out by grabbing nine of the set's final 12 points. The Braves hit an impressive .257 in the second set and used a key 7-2 run midway through to even things up heading into the intermission.
Georgia College hit just .083 in the third set of the night, but benefitted from 11 attack errors by the Braves to grab a 25-18 victory, and then closed out the match by hitting at a .273 clip in set four on the way to another 25-18 victory.
The Braves will open up a two-game road trip on Friday when they make the long trip to central Alabama to battle Montevallo (12-7, 4-2) inside Trustmark Arena. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. EST.
