WILMINGTON – Freshman Avery Locklear came off the bench to score a team-high 12 points, while fellow newcomer LaShonda Prichard grabbed 10 rebounds, but the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team was unable to pull ahead of UNC Wilmington for the victory, 68-43, on Sunday afternoon in exhibition play in the Trask Coliseum.
The Braves closed out the exhibition portion of their schedule with a 1-1 record after defeating Campbell on Friday evening and will open up their 2015-16 regular season on Tuesday when the Black and Gold hosts Fayetteville State (1-1) at 6 p.m. on Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
Locklear drained a game-high four treys in her 22 minutes on the court, while Jonissa Monley finished the contest with six points and senior Mary Robinson logged seven rebounds. UNCP out-rebounded the Seahawks, 34-32, including 25 defensive boards and owned a 28-18 advantage in bench scoring.
The Black and Gold suffered 30 turnovers, which allowed UNCW to utilize them for 29 points, but shot 37.5 percent from the arc compared to 25.0 percent by the Seahawks. UNCP was perfect from the foul line in the second half going 6-for-6 and ended the game with a 75.0 percent success rate from the charity stripe.
UNCW was led by Naqaiyyah Teague with 16 points, while Jordan Henry and Madison Raque added 15 and 13 points, respectively. Henry registered the game's only double-double as she recorded 12 rebounds, while Teague led the team in assists and steals. The Seahawks shot 44.1 percent from the field following a shooting percentage of 51.6 in the first half.
UNCW picked up the first points of the game as Jasmine Steele drained a three-pointer at the 7:54 mark in the first period, but UNCP took over the one-point advantage with 5:35 remaining in the opening quarter on a three-pointer from Locklear. The Seahawks led by as much as five points in the first 10 minutes, but the Black and Gold evened up the game at 14-14 before UNCW controlled the lead for the remainder of the contest.
The Seahawks took a 38-22 advantage into halftime and kept the visitors at arm's length in the second half by limiting UNCP to just 21 points in the final 20 minutes for the win.
