LAURINBURG - Despite a third-set comeback attempt and hitting .202 throughout the contest, the UNC Pembroke volleyball team fell in four sets to U.S. 74 rival St. Andrews, 3-1, on Tuesday evening on Harris Court in Laurinburg.
The Braves (3-11) dropped a two-game winning streak over St. Andrews (4-5) which dated back to 2008 as the record is nearly equal at 24-23 in the series between the two schools. The set scores were 25-20, 25-22, 17-25, 25-15.
Senior Nicole Mathews and junior Caroline Pridgen had double-digit kills for the Braves as Mathews hit .379 in the contest and Pridgen added a .450 hitting percentage. Setter Alicia Paeplow contributed 22 assists to the Braves' attack at the net, while Ka'asha Jefferies logged 16 digs and Josephine Yang tallied 11.
As a team, the Braves totaled seven team blocks with Pridgen leading the way with five block assists and Cecilia Brandon adding a trio. Brandon and Yang shared a team-best two service aces.
St. Andrews pushed ahead quickly in set one to take the 10-5 lead, but UNCP caught up and trailed by one point at the 10-9 mark. However, the Knights' net presence tipped the set to St. Andrews, 25-20. In set two, the Braves out paced St. Andrews to a 19-16 lead, however, the Knights tied the score at 20-20 and finished out the set for a 2-0 lead.
UNCP started off the third set with a 7-0 run and pushed the lead to 11-1 which the Knights were unable to overcome bringing UNCP to within one set. The Black and Gold hit a powerful .364 with 15 kills, while St. Andrews hit a mere .118 in game three.
In the final set, St. Andrews bolted out to an early lead and utilized seven UNCP attack errors to stretch out the lead for the final 3-1 win.
St. Andrews was led by Tessa Smith with 13 kills and 11 digs for the only double-double of the contest, while Lindsey Wagner and Angelica Arroyo added 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Jaden Lynch carried a team-high 35 assists and Nora Darrhar registered 17 digs. The Knights hit an overall .197 and finished the game with 48 kills and 56 digs.
The Braves will head out on the road on Friday for a contest in St. Augustine, Fla., as the squad takes on Flagler (7-2, 0-0 PBC) in a 7 p.m. Peach Belt Conference matchup inside Flagler Gymnasium.
