Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Late Defensive Stand Pushes Men's Basketball Past Flagler

PEMBROKEBrandon Watts and Alex Bradley both came up with game-changing steals in the final 38 seconds and the UNC Pembroke men's basketball team rallied back from a 12-point deficit early in the second half to stun visiting Flagler, 94-92, on Wednesday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

The result gave the Braves (15-11, 9-8 PBC) their fifth win in the last six outings and a critical bump forward in the race for a spot in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament later this month. The setback dropped the Saints (8-18, 3-14) to 0-10 on the road this season and 0-7 all-time in Pembroke.

Watts and Bradley both registered 25 points after combining to shoot 51.5 percent (17-for-33) from the field to lead the Black & Gold. Jihad Wright had notched his fifth career double-double by the halftime break and finished with 15 points and a career-best 14 boards. Brandon Winford totaled 14 points and seven rebounds for the hosts as well.

Matt Clark scored a team-best 21 points for Flagler who shot 47.7 percent from the field in the contest, including an eye-popping 15-for-30 from downtown. Vaughn McCall chipped in 19 points for the Saints, while Keith Gray and Nick Grier both added 17.

The Saints led 67-57 after Jeffercy Jean's reverse layup with 10:05 to play, but the Braves steadily chipped away at their deficit over the next five minutes and took a 77-76 lead on Mike Smith's 3-pointer at the 5:26 mark. The Saints grabbed a 90-86 advantage on a Vaughn McCall 3-pointer with 74 seconds left, but Bradley hit three free throws to bring the Black & Gold within a point and the Braves turned steals into points on each of the next two possessions to go out in front for good.

UNCP shot just 35 percent in the opening half, but kept itself in the game thanks to a dominating 32-14 showing on the glass. The Saints connected on eight 3-pointers in the first half alone, but UNCP outscored the visitors 20-4 on second chance points. Flagler led by as many as eight points in the opening stanza after Clark's 3-pointer with 4:56 left before the intermission, but the Braves scored the game's next nine points to go up 37-36 just more than two minutes later.

The Braves will open up a regular season-ending two-game road trip on Saturday when they head to Savannah, Ga., to take on PBC East rival Armstrong State (10-14, 8-9) for the second time in seven days. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. in Alumni Arena.
