Baseball Falls To No. 9 Millersville In Midweek Affair

PEMBROKE – Visiting and ninth-ranked Millersville plated four runs in the first three innings behind a solid outing from right-hander Brandon Miller to fuel the Marauders to a 7-0 win over the UNC Pembroke baseball team on Thursday evening at Sammy Cox Field.

Stibel Aleman Saba (1-for-3) wrecked Miller's perfect game with a two-out single in the fifth to provide one of two hits for the Braves (7-3) on the night. Roberto Rivera (1-for-4) provided the only other hit of the game for the hosts on a two-out opposite-field single in the sixth.

Four players recorded multiple hits for the Marauders (7-1), including Chas McCormick who highlighted a 2-for-5 night at the plate with a two-run homer in the top of the fifth that padded the lead for the visitors out to 6-0. Leadoff hitter Tyler Orris scored a pair of runs on a 2-for-5 outing as well.

Matt Fuhr (0-1) struck out a pair in the first inning, but saddled the loss for UNCP after allowing one earned run on two hits in an inning of work. Six other Braves saw action from the hill in the contest. Miller (3-0), an all-star selection with the Cape Cod League's Chatham A's last summer, allowed just two hits over eight scoreless innings of work to grab his third win in as many starts in 2016. He also struck out six.

Millersville used a leadoff single from Norris, as well as an ill-timed error, to put a pair of runners in scoring position quickly in the first, and then got a RBI single from Dan Stolzfus to provide Miller with all of the run support he would need. The Marauders added two more scores in the second, and led 4-0 after David Summerfield's fielder's choice RBI with one out in the third.

The Black & Gold will close out a season-opening 15-game homestand this weekend when they bunker down to host Shippensburg (3-4) in a three-game set at Sammy Cox Field. The squads will open up the weekend with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, before closing out the series with a single game on Sunday at high noon.
