ANDERSON, S.C. – The UNC Pembroke wrestling team registered 16 individual victories on the day, including 12 of the bonus-point variety, on the way to tacking up convincing victories over both Anderson (39-8) and Eastern College Athletic Conference foe Emmanuel (40-7) on Saturday afternoon inside Anderson's Abney Athletic Center.
The results marked the second- and third-straight wins for the Braves (13-7, 4-0 ECAC) who clinched a winning regular season campaign for the fourth-straight year. It was UNCP's 10th-straight series victory over the Trojans in the annual "Battle For The Belt" series.
Eight different wrestlers came away from the tri-meet unscathed, including Chad Hoff, Hayden Fry, all-American Blaze Shade and Stuart Nadeau who all tacked up a pair of bonus-point wins to their season record.
Anderson took an early 5-3 lead on the Braves thanks to Derek Bohle's technical fall win at 133 pounds, but UNCP reeled off three-straight bonus-point victories to take the lead for good. Fry's 17-0 technical fall at 157 pounds gave the visitors a comfortable 20-8 lead on the team scoreboard, but the Trojans chipped into their deficit via a tight 4-3 decision by Jared Costa in the 165-pound bout.
That would be the last team points of the dual, however, as the Braves won each of the final four individual matches, including first-period pins by both Mikey Thomas (2:13) and Nadeau (2:03) at 197 and 285 pounds, respectively.
Josh Brown's first-period pin of Ryan Hudson would get the Black & Gold going against the Lions in a dual meet that UNCP never trailed. Shade's forfeit win at 174 pounds padded the team lead out to 31-3 for the Braves, before Cody Chaney tallied a 13-2 major decision at 184 pounds to add some variety to the box score. UNCP would close out the onslaught, however, with a decision by Faris Teia at 197 pounds and another pin by Nadeau in the heavyweight bout.
