FLORENCE, S.C. – Francis Marion battled back from a pair of early-inning deficits and utilized a season-high six errors by the UNC Pembroke baseball team to plate nine unearned runs on the way to a series-clinching 18-10 win over the Braves on Saturday afternoon at Sparrow Stadium.
The Braves (23-14, 9-11 PBC) got multi-hit outings from six different players in the setback, including Roberto Rivera who tripled and scored to highlight a 3-for-5 day at the plate. Nick Debo tripled and scored four times on a 2-for-4 outing for the visitors.
Brooks Kennedy doubled , homered and scored four times on a 4-for-5 showing for Francis Marion (22-16, 10-10), while Casey Clauss walked and doubled on a 3-for-5 hitting line.
Trace Hagler (1-1) took the tough-luck loss for the Black & Gold despite allowing just four hits and one earned run in 2-2/3 innings of relief. Jacob Shumate (2-0) surrendered three hits and a pair of runs in 3-1/3 innings from the hill to grab the win for the hosts, while John McGinty notched his third save of the campaign by working the game's final five outs.
Francis Marion trailed by single scores after the second and fifth innings, but scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to go out in front for good. UNCP pulled to within a lone run, 10-9, on Christian Snider's RBI single in the top of the seventh, but the Patriots took advantage of a pair of fielding mistakes to score twice more in the bottom of the frame, and then added five unearned insurance runs in the eighth to provide the final.
The Braves and Patriots will close out their weekend set on Sunday at Sparrow Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
