BELMONT – The 24th-ranked UNC Pembroke wrestling team dropped a pair of matches to nationally-ranked foes to open up Friday's action at the Super Region 2 Duals, but capped its day on a positive note by downing Belmont Abbey in their Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) opener.
 
The victory for the Braves (3-4, 1-0 ECAC) wrapped up an undefeated run for the club in the "Battle For I-74" series for the third-straight season, while also helping UNCP improve to 14-1 all-time against the Crusaders. Belmont Abbey (8-11, 1-3) has now lost nine-straight matches in the series with their in-state rival.
 
The Black & Gold got bonus-point victories from six different wrestlers in the contest, including pins by Chad Hoff (141 pounds), Tyler Makosy (149) and all-American Blaze Shade (174). Makenna Cook registered a 19-0 technical fall in just 2-1/2 minutes in his bout at 197 pounds, while 11^th-ranked Mikey Thomas turned in a 14-3 major decision at 184 pounds.
 
Seventh-ranked Findlay, which showcases five nationally-ranked wrestlers in its starting lineup, staked claim to a 16-6 advantage on the team scoreboard after 11^th-ranked Alonzo Turner's tight 3-1 victory at 165 pounds, but UNCP did not go away quietly. Shade toppled fifth-ranked Bradley Metz at 174 pounds and Thomas followed with a 7-3 decision at 184 pounds to pull the Black & Gold to within 16-12, but Findlay closed out the match with two pins to win going away.
 
Tiffin used a pair of bonus-point victories to storm out to a 13-3 lead after just four individual bouts, but an upset win by Eric Milks at 157 pounds signaled the start of three-straight victories by the Braves that helped them knot the team score up at 13 apiece. The Dragons would capture the remaining three matches of the dual, however, to seal the outcome.
 
The Braves will continue their road schedule on Thursday when they head to Gaffney, S.C., for a key ECAC matchup with Limestone (8-3, 3-1) inside the Timken Center. Wrestling action is set to get underway at 7 p.m.
