PEMBROKE –
Hayden Buffkin hit a go-ahead sac fly with none out in the fifth inning and the 11
th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team held off a valiant comeback effort in the ninth to lift the Braves to a series-clinching 7-6 victory over Lake Erie on Sunday afternoon at Sammy Cox Field.
Â
It was the fourth series win of the season for the Black & Gold (12-2) who will get one final tune-up on Wednesday at Catawba before opening up Peach Belt Conference play on Friday. The Storm (4-3) will continue a four-game North Carolina road trip on Monday at Mount Olive.
Â
Nick Debo singled four times and scored twice on a perfect 4-for-4 day at the plate to lead the Braves, while
Hayden Buffkin doubled twice and drove in three runs on a 2-for-3 hitting line.
Lucas Ledford (2-for-4) registered a pair of hits for the hosts as well.
Â
Aaron Biggerstaff (1-0) struck out three and yielded just a lone unearned run over four innings to earn the win in relief for UNCP, while freshman
River Ryan pitched the ninth to record his first collegiate save. Brian Bullock (1-1) gave up four hits and a pair of earned runs in four innings of relief to saddle the loss for Lake Erie. He also struck out four.
Â
Lake Erie plated a pair of first-inning runs for the second-straight game to grab the early lead, but the Braves cut their deficit in half on Buffkin's RBI double in the second and then took a 4-2 advantage with three more scores in the third. The Storm negated a 5-2 deficit with three runs in the fifth, but Buffkin put the hosts up for good with his knock to centerfield in the fifth.
Â
UNCP pushed across an insurance run on a sac fly with one out in the eighth, and would eventually need it thanks to a last-gasp effort by the visitors. The Storm put runners at the corners with their first two at-bats in the final frame and made it a one-run game on Samuel Browning's double play ball minute later, but Ryan bunkered down and got Nigel Williams on a game-ending groundout to slam the door on the rally.
Â
The Braves will head to Salisbury on Wednesday for a 5 p.m. contest against Catawba (10-3) at Newman Park.
