NEWBERRY, S.C. – The 23^rd-ranked UNC Pembroke wrestling team rallied back from an early 10-0 deficit with five straight individual victories, and then used a clutch victory from Makenna Cook at 197 pounds to clinch a 20-19 upset win at Newberry on Thursday evening.
 
It was the third win in the last four dual meets for the Braves (6-6, 3-2 ECAC) who captured just their third win in the 13-year-old, but their first inside Eleazer Arena. The setback marked the first conference loss of the season for the Wolves (11-9, 3-1) who had their two-match win streak snapped as well.
 
Seventh-ranked Trung Duong registered a pin at 125 pounds and eighth-ranked Jordan Simpson followed with a win by major decision at 133 pounds to give Newberry a quick 10-0 lead, but Chad Hoff's overtime win at 141 pounds signaled the first of five-straight wins for the visitors that eventually gave them a 17-10 advantage after second-ranked Blaze Shade's 3-1 decision in the 174-pound matchup. The run was also fueled by an 18-3 technical fall by Eric Milks at 157 pounds.
 
Huston Evans, the nation's sixth-ranked wrestler at 174 pounds, dodged Shade in favor of wrestling up a weight class and used a pair of late moves to tally a 5-2 decision at 184 pounds that brought the Wolves to within four points, 17-13, but Cook iced the match minutes later with a 7-4 decision over Cody Brundage in the 197-pound matchup.
 
The Braves will close out the regular season portion of their 2016-17 schedule on Monday when they suit up to entertain ECAC foe King (4-6, 2-3) in a 7 p.m. Senior Night dual meet at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. Admission to all 2016-17 UNCP wrestling dual meets is free.
