BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – UNC Pembroke steamrolled through short-handed American International to pick up a midday victory, but dropped the bookend matches to both LIU Post and Clarion, as the Braves wrapped up a near two-month road trip at Long Island Wrestling Day on Sunday in Brookville, N.Y.
LIU Post strengthened its lead out to 17-8 with Jackson Mordente's major decision at 165 pounds, but the Braves strung together three-straight victories, including
Faris Teia's 11-2 major decision at 184 pounds, to go ahead by one point, 18-17, heading into the final individual bout. Damien Caffrey used a takedown in sudden death overtime, however, to hand the win to the hosts.
The Black & Gold captured six weight classes via forfeit in their matchup with American International, but got bonus-point victories from
Ethan Hnasko (133 pounds) and
Joey DiMartino (174) to fuel the runaway.
Jayquon McEntyre (133) and
Bryce Walker (184) toughed out decisions in the final dual meet of the day against Clarion, but the Golden Eagles took each of the eight other matchups to seal the outcome.
UNCP will return to action on Thursday when it battles both Spartanburg Methodist (3-4) and Queens (3-4) in a 5 p.m. doubleheader at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. Admission to all 2017-18 UNCP wrestling dual meets is free.
