Eight Wrestlers Earn Trips To Podium At 38th Annual Pembroke Classic

November 11, 2018

PEMBROKE – Sophomore Jonathan Miller completed a perfect run through the 141-pound bracket with a 15-9 victory in the championship bout and led a parade of eight UNC Pembroke wrestlers to the podium on Saturday at the 38^th Annual Pembroke Classic on Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

It was the third career trip to the podium for Miller who captured top honors at the Pembroke Classic for the second time in three years. Tyler Makosy (157 pounds) and Brandon Sloop (184) were both felled in the championship match of their respective tournaments, while Maxton native and Purnell Swett High School product William Deese shared third place in the 141-pound tournament. Deese tallied a team-best five victories on the day, but was unable to wrestle in the third-place match due to the NCAA's limit on six matches per day.

Four wrestlers – Michael Perez (125), Ronnie Pietro (133), Ethan Hnasko (141) and Ernesto Valentin (184) – walked away from action with fifth-place finishes. Seventeen Braves registered at least one victory at the event, including 10 that posted multiple wins.

The Braves will be back in action again next weekend with competition on both days. UNCP will compete in the Wolfpack Duals inside NC State's Reynolds Coliseum, and will take part in the Wolfpack Open on Sunday in Carmichael Gymnasium.
