Wrestling Dethrones No. 14 Newberry, Moves Atop ECAC Standings

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke wrestling team tacked up clutch bonus-point victories in three-straight matches, including Faris Teia's major decision at 184 pounds that clinched the final outcome, and the Braves took sole possession of first place in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) standings with a 23-14 victory over 14th-ranked Newberry on Friday evening.

It was the fifth win in the last six dual meets for the Black & Gold (11-10, 4-1 ECAC) who can wrap up the program's first ECAC title with a win at 22nd-ranked King on Monday evening. The setback snapped a two-match win streak for the Wolves (10-6, 3-1) who have now lost consecutive matchups against the Braves for the first time in the 14-match-old series.

Freshman Nick Daggett and sophomore Jayquon McEntyre got UNCP off to a good start with wins by decision at both 125 and 133 pounds, but Newberry got on the board thanks to Isaiah Royal's decision at 141 pounds, and then made it a two-point dual after fourth-ranked Austin Palmer picked up an overtime win at 157 pounds.

UNCP would not be denied on this night, however, as the Braves used a forfeit win at 165 pounds, coupled with Brandon Sloop's major decision in the 174-pound bout, to go out in front 19-7, and Teia erased any doubt left in the facility with a dominant 15-3 major decision at 184 pounds that put the dual out of reach for the visitors.

The Braves will close out their 2017-18 regular season schedule on Monday when they head to Bristol, Tenn., to take on King (6-6, 3-2) in Kline Gym. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
