KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The 10
th-ranked UNC Pembroke wrestling team captured the first seven individual matchups of the day, and recorded four bonus-point victories as well, to stop a two-match skid with a 33-10 rout of Minot State in the final round of the Kutztown Duals on Saturday.
The result gave the Braves (4-4) their first win of the 2019 calendar year, as well as a victory in its first-ever meeting with the Beavers (1-8). The contest marked the only match of the day for the Black & Gold whose competition schedule at the event was condensed due to the anticipated effects of Winter Storm Harper.
Nick Daggett turned in a third-period pin of Dean Arevalo at 125 pounds, and freshman
Ronnie Pietro followed with a 15-0 technical fall at 133 pounds to give the Braves an early 11-0 advantage, but the run continued for the next five matches as well. The run of success would eventually subside for the Black & Gold after
Faris Teia toughed out a 5-4 win at 174 pounds to give the Black & Gold a 27-0 lead on the team scoreboard.
Marcus Montgomery's second-period pin of Je-Mario Jones in the 197-pound matchup would cap the scoring on the day for the Braves.
UNCP will be back in action again on Thursday when it makes the short trip to Gaffney, S.C., to lock arms with region rival Limestone (4-6) inside the Timken Center. Wrestling action is slated to get underway at 7 p.m.
