Garrett Hill (174) all turned in perfect days on the mat for the 21
st-ranked UNC Pembroke wrestling team as the Braves dropped a tough decision to 12
th-ranked West Liberty before rebounding with a rout of Mount Olive.
The Braves (1-3) registered 13 individual victories on the day, including eight in the matchup with the host-Trojans. The Black & Gold fell to the nationally-ranked Hilltoppers (2-2), 22-16, but capped the event with a 39-10 win over Mount Olive (1-2).
Hill toughed out a 3-2 win over West Liberty's Chance Morgan to give the Braves a comfortable 16-6 lead on the team scoreboard, but the Hilltoppers claimed bonus-point triumphs in each of the last three individual bouts to grab the team victory. Zane Lanham posted a major decision over
Brandon Sloop at 184 pounds, and seventh-ranked Logan Kemp followed with a quick pin of
Ernesto Valentin at 197 pounds to knot things up. Francesco Borsellino's first-period pin in the heavyweight matchup clinched the dual.
Dylan Wilman's major decision at 133 pounds gave Mount Olive an early 4-3 advantage in the nightcap, but the Braves responded with seven-straight individual victories to pocket the team win.
Jonathan Miller (141), Hill and Sloop all tallied wins by technical fall, while Peticos and
Kaleb Warner (165) both won via pin.
The Black & Gold will be back in action again on Tuesday when they suit up to welcome Limestone (1-0) for a regional contest at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. Wrestling action is scheduled to get underway at 7 p.m. Admission to all 2019-20 UNCP Wrestling home matches is free.
