No. 40 Baseball Stops Skid With Win Over Wingate

PEMBROKE – The 40th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team tacked up a pair of multi-run frames to help support a solid outing from its pitching staff to help the Braves snap a six-game losing streak with a 5-1 victory over region rival Wingate on Wednesday evening at Sammy Cox Field.

The Braves (7-7) have now captured 26 of the last 29 matchups in the series with Wingate, including 14 of the last 15 in Pembroke. Wednesday's setback was the second-straight loss for the Bulldogs (10-5) who were coming off of a series win at then-No. 5 Catawba over the weekend.

KEY INNINGS
BOT 2 Jarratt Mobley hit a two-out double and scored moments later on a RBI single from Zach Ghelfi. Seth Hartings reached in the next at-bat with a single to right field, and Kevon Perkins followed with a RBI single up the middle that scored Ghelfi, as well as induced an unforced fielding error that allowed Hartings to score all the way from first base.
BOT 6 Jarratt Mobley laced a full-count pitch over the left field fence to lead off the sixth, and Kevon Perkins hit a two-out solo homer three batters later to cap the scoring on the night for the Black & Gold.
TOP 7 Wingate got a two-out single from McCann Mellett, and then loaded the bases thanks to free passes issued to each of the next two batters. Dylan Radford came in to slam the door on the rally, however, when he induced an inning-ending groundout from the bat of Jed Bryant.
TOP 8 The Bulldogs loaded the bases again in the eighth and, this time, spoiled the shutout on Ricky Clark's RBI groundout that plated an unearned run. Wingate loaded up the bases again when Justin Guy drew a four-pitch walk with the next at-bat, but UNCP reliever Brandon Winstead struck out each of the next two batters to nix the threat again. The Bulldogs stranded 16 runners on the base paths in Wednesday's outing, including nine in scoring position.
