INDIANAPOLIS – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball team will make its sixth appearance at the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Tournament in the last nine years when it takes on fourth-seeded Catawba in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Southeast Regional on Saturday in Charlotte.
The Braves (21-9) are one of four Peach Belt Conference teams that earned a berth into the NCAA postseason. Second-seeded and 15
th-ranked Augusta (26-5) will play seventh-seeded Francis Marion (21-8) in the opening round, while third-seeded and 17
th-ranked USC Aiken (26-5) will battle sixth-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne (21-10).
Top-seeded and sixth-ranked Queens (28-4) will face eighth-seeded Emmanuel (25-9) in the other quarterfinal game. First-round action inside the Levine Center on the campus of Queens University is set to begin on Saturday. The semifinals will take place on Sunday, while the championship game will be contested on Tuesday.
The Braves are 16-24 all-time against Catawba (23-7) in a series that dates all the way back to the 1965-66 campaign. UNCP has captured six of the previous eight matchups with the Indians (23-7) including a 80-75 overtime victory earlier this season at the PBC/SAC Challenge in Salisbury. Senior
James Murray-Boyles hit a game-tying 3-pointer with five seconds left in regulation to send that game into the extra period.
