Queens Stuns Baseball With Late-Inning Rally

PEMBROKEElijah Helton hit a 2-run homer to spark a four-run seventh inning that gave the UNC Pembroke baseball team a 10-5 lead, but Queens rallied for seven runs in the final two frames to stun the Braves, 12-11, on Wednesday evening at Sammy Cox Field.

The setback marked the fifth loss in the last six home outings for the Black & Gold (18-20) who also fell to 2-8 in games decided by one run this season as well. The triumph snapped a two-game skid for the Royals (12-25) who picked up their fourth win of the season against teams from the Peach Belt Conference.

BOT 3 Dominic Ford singled in the first at-bat of the afternoon, and Queens took a 2-0 lead minutes later when Noah Jones smacked a one-ball offering from UNCP starter Hank Simpson over the right field fence.
BOT 7 Luke Jackson (hit by pitch) drew a free pass to lead off the frame, and Elijah Helton followed with a towering homer to left field to stretch UNCP's advantage out to three runs, 8-5. Bobby Dixon hit a one-out double to plate Connor Grainger, and a costly throwing error by the Royals allowed the hosts to take a 10-5 lead into the eighth.
TOP 8 Queens loaded the bases with its first three at-bats to chase reliever Jacob Morrison from the hill, and Dominic Ford got the benefits of a hard-hit ball that was stuffed when it hit the backside of field umpire Rick Trollinger. Noah Jones (two-run single) and Ryan Dudney (single) both recorded RBI at-bats to pull their team to within a run, and Queens used a costly throwing error to score two more times and grab an 11-10 lead.
TOP 9 Alex Sexton reached on a fielder's choice, moved into scoring position on a throwing error and eventually scored on another error by the Black & Gold to pad the lead out to a pair of runs.
BOT 9 Zach Ghelfi scored from third base on a fielder's choice RBI off the bat of River Ryan, and UNCP loaded the bases with one out showing when Ethan Baucom was hit by pitch.
