Errors Cost Baseball In Home Loss To Barton

PEMBROKE – Junior Ethan Baucom hit his NCAA-leading 20th home run of the season in the fourth, and gave the UNC Pembroke baseball team a late lead with a two-run single in the seventh, but visiting Barton capitalized on a season-high seven errors by the Braves to register an 8-7 win on Tuesday evening at Sammy Cox Field.
 
It was the seventh loss in the last nine contests for the Braves (19-23) who committed their most errors in an outing since registering seven in a 4-3 loss to then-No. 1 Mount Olive in the 2017 NCAA Southeast Regional. It was the fourth-straight win for the Bulldogs (28-18) who won for just the second time in their last nine trips to Pembroke.

KEY INNINGS
BOT 4 Ethan Baucom gave UNCP an early lead when he hammered a two-strike offering from Barton starter Connor Patterson over the fence in straight-away centerfield.
TOP 5 UNCP committed consecutive errors with one showing on the right field scoreboard and Barton capitalized with consecutive one-out RBI singles. Another fielding error by the hosts allowed a third run to cross the plate.
BOT 6 The Braves loaded the bases with their first three at-bats in the seventh to set the table for a two-run go-ahead single from Ethan Baucom. The hosts would take a 7-4 lead into the eighth following RBI at-bats from both Luke Jackson (groundout) and Connor Grainger (single).
TOP 9 Barton climbed to within a run on a costly throwing error by the Braves, and then went ahead for good on JoJo Allen's two-run single with two outs later in the inning.

The Braves will step back into Peach Belt Conference play this weekend when they make the long trip to St. Augustine, Fla., to take on league-leading Flagler (25-17, 16-8 PBC) in a three-game series at Drysdale Field. The squads will open up the weekend with a 7 p.m. tilt on Thursday.
