Francis Marion Sweeps Series-Opening Twinbill With Baseball

PEMBROKE – Visiting Francis Marion got a clutch home run from Fred Wadsworth to highlight a key four-run sixth inning, and held off a last-gasp rally by the UNC Pembroke baseball team to finish off a doubleheader sweep of the UNC Pembroke baseball team with a 6-5 victory in the nightcap. The Patriots won game one, 15-5.
 
The Braves (17-19, 7-13 PBC) have now dropped seven of their last nine outings, including four-straight at home. The triumphs gave the Patriots (22-15, 13-10) their third Peach Belt Conference series victory of the season, but their first since taking two of three from Flagler in mid-February.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
BOT 1 The Braves loaded the bases with their first three at-bats of the ballgame, and took a 2-0 lead on Luke Jackson's double to the gap in right field. Connor Grainger pushed the lead out to 3-0 on a sacrifice fly, and the Braves pushed across their fourth run of the frame via a fielding error by the Patriots minutes later. 
TOP 6 Fred Wadsworth led off the sixth with a solo homer to left field that knotted the score up at four apiece, and the visitors grabbed the lead three at-bats later on Gage Taylor's RBI single up the middle.
BOT 6 Luke Jackson climbed aboard via a one-out single, and Elijah Helton followed with a double that put a pair of runners into position. Jackson eventually scampered home on a wild pitch.
TOP 7 The Patriots loaded the bases with their first three at-bats, and then took the lead for good on a two-run single from Cole Hinnant. Gage Taylor walked to load the bases back up with the next at-bat, and Leniel Gonzalez hit a grand slam with one out that all but sealed the outcome.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 4 Nick Pappas led off the inning with a solo homer to give Francis Marion the lead for good, but the Patriots made it a 2-0 game on Alex Griffith's one-out solo homer two at-bats later. 
BOT 4 Ethan Baucom reached via a one-out error in the home half of the fourth, and another error minutes later brought the junior racing all the way home from first base.
TOP 6 Leniel Gonzalez hit a sac fly to bring Nick Pappas home from third base with the 3-1 advantage. Patrick Jackson and C.J. Mackinson drew consecutive two-out walks to set the table for Fred Wadsworth's 3-run homer to centerfield.
BOT 8 River Ryan laced a two-out double down the left field line, and Ethan Baucom hit his second home run of the game on a two-strike offering to pull the hosts to within a run.
BOT 9 Connor Grainger drew a free pass to lead off the home half of the ninth, and Jarratt Mobley moved the runner into position on a sacrifice bunt. Zach Ghelfi laced a 2-and-2 offering into right field, but Francis Marion got a big out when they gunned down pinch runner Trenton Walsh retreating back to third base.
