Barton Uses Long Balls To Slip Past Baseball

WILSON – Barton clubbed five home runs, including four in the bottom of the fifth alone, and held off a furious ninth-inning rally to upend the UNC Pembroke baseball team, 8-7, on Tuesday afternoon at Nixon Field.
 
It was the third loss in the last four outings for the Braves (7-5) who will return home this weekend to battle Peach Belt Conference rival USC Aiken at Sammy Cox Field. Barton (7-5) has now registered wins in three-straight games, and has captured consecutive games in the series with the Black & Gold as well.

KEY INNINGS
TOP 5 Garrett Littleton (single) and Ethan Baucom (walk) both reached safely to lead off the frame, and both eventually came around to score on a RBI single from Trevor Clemons, as well as a sacrifice fly from the bat of Bobby Dixon.
BOT 5 Andres Machado singled to lead off the bottom of the frame, and Trevor Edior's one-out homer two batters later knotted things up again. The Bulldogs followed with three consecutive solo homers to take a lead they would not relinquish.
TOP 7 The Braves cut into an 8-4 deficit with two runs in the seventh. Garrett Littleton and Gage Hammonds both reached via singles which eventually set the table for a 2-run RBI single from Bobby Dixon.
TOP 9 Ethan Baucom homered to lead off the ninth and pull the Black & Gold to within a lone run, but reliever Colby Warren struck out a batter and induced two-straight groundouts to slam the door on the late rally.

The Braves will open up a seven-game home stand this weekend when they suit up to take on USC Aiken (8-1, 2-1 PBC) in a weekend series at Sammy Cox Field. The squads will open up the three-game set with a 4 p.m. contest on Friday.
