Baseball Wins Both Ends Of Series-Opening Twinbill With USC Aiken

PEMBROKE – Ethan Baucom's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the 13th inning plated Alex Simpson with the game-winning run and capped off a marathon contest and gave the Braves a series-opening doubleheader sweep of USC Aiken on Saturday at Sammy Cox Field. UNCP won game one, 9-2, and prevailed 5-4 in 13 innings in the nightcap.
 
UNCP (9-5, 3-2 PBC) has now won four-straight games in the series with USC Aiken, as well as four of the last five in the series at Sammy Cox Field. The early result stopped a two-game win streak for the Pacers (8-3, 2-3) who played their first road games of the 2020 campaign on Saturday as well.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
BOT 2 Bobby Dixon reached via a free pass (hit by pitch) to open the frame, and scored two batters later when an errant throw brought him all the way around from first base.
BOT 3 Ethan Baucom (walk) and Gage Hammonds (double) both reached to lead off the bottom of the third, and Bobby Dixon gave the hosts a 2-0 lead on a RBI groundout. Jarratt Mobley doubled in a run two batters later, and River Ryan completed the 5-run frame with a two-run homer to left field.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 1 Luke Leisenring hit a two-out RBI double to give USC Aiken its first lead of the afternoon, and Alex Mills followed with a two-run homer to left field to give the Pacers an early 3-0 lead.
BOT 5 The Braves knotted the score up at three runs apiece with two scores in the fifth inning. Bobby Dixon's RBI triple to the gap in left field brought one run across, and Jarratt Mobley singled home Dixon to batters later.
BOT 6 Connor Grainger smacked reliever Henry Cartrett's first offering of the sixth over the fence in left field to give UNCP its first lead of the nightcap.
TOP 7 USC Aiken put its first two batters of the frame aboard via free passes, and Eric McGirt's one-out RBI single up the middle helped the Pacers knot the score up at four runs apiece.
BOT 13 The Braves loaded the bases with their first three at-bats of the frame, but William Ard retired the next two batters in order to swing the momentum. Ethan Baucom would cap the 4-hour and 21-minute marathon minutes later, however, when he hit a seeing-eye single through the left side of the infield to plate the game-winner.
