GREENWOOD, S.C. – The UNC Pembroke wrestling team registered 19 takedowns and seven nearfalls on the way to winning all 10 individual matches and posting a 43-0 shutout at Lander on Wednesday evening in Horne Arena.
It was the first shutout for the Braves (12-9) since a 50-0 home skunking of St. Andrews on Jan. 30, 2016, and the first road shutout for the Black & Gold in more than a decade. The setback snapped a two-match win streak for the first-year Bearcats (4-6) who took down both King and Emmanuel at home on January 24.
The Braves opened the evening with back-to-back pins from both
Nick Daggett (125 pounds) and
Logan Seliga (133), and then stretched their lead out to 20 points when senior
Tyler Makosy picked up his 99
th career victory via a 21-6 technical fall in the 149-pound bout.
Brandon Sloop rallied back from an early deficit to win at 184 pounds and extend the advantage out to 36-0, and junior
Ryan Monk finished out the night with a late takedown to win a 6-4 decision in the heavyweight bout.
The Black & Gold will return to South Carolina on Sunday to take part in the Newberry Open, before closing out the home portion of its regular season schedule with a 6 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday. Admission to all 2019-20 UNCP wrestling home dual meets is free.
