Baseball Splits Series-Opening Twinbill With Lock Haven

PEMBROKE – Visiting Lock Haven limited the UNC Pembroke baseball team to just seven hits on the way to capturing a 4-3 win in the opener, but the Braves lit up the scoreboard with 13 runs and 10 hits in the nightcap and used a 13-2 victory in the nightcap to forge a series-opening doubleheader split with the Bald Eagles on Saturday at Sammy Cox Field.
 
UNCP (4-2) registered just a 1-for-7 clip with runners in scoring position in the opening game, but hit .385 (5-for-13) in the same situations on Saturday evening. Lock Haven (1-1), who is opening up its 2020 season in Pembroke, was 0-for-16 with runners on base in the late game.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
TOP 2 A double play emptied the base paths and put two quick outs on the board for the visitors, but Lock Haven loaded the bases with its next three at-bats and used Gavin Troutman's two-run single moments later to take a lead it would not relinquish.
TOP 7 The Bald Eagles pushed their lead out to 4-1 thanks to a costly wild pitch by the hosts.
BOT 7 Wellington Guzman drew a six-pitch walk to lead off the frame, and Alex Simpson hammered a two-strike offering over the left field fence moments later to get the Braves to within a run, 4-3.
BOT 9 Alex Simpson laced a one-out double to the gap in rightfield and Trevor Clemons drew a 4-pitch walk with the next at-bat to get the winning run aboard. Justin Lichtenwalner came on and shut down the threat, however, but forcing a fly out and a groundout to end the game.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
BOT 1 Trevor Clemons walked to lead things off for the Braves and eventually made his way around the base paths before scoring on a two-out single from Ethan Baucom.
TOP 5 Quin Ambeault doubled to lead off the frame, and Reagan Lawlor pulled the visitors to within a run on a RBI groundout that scored Ambeault and made it a 3-2 contest.
BOT 7 Already leading by a pair of runs, UNCP added five insurance runs in a seventh inning that was highlighted by a bases-clearing triple from River Ryan. Ryan crossed home plate a short time later via a wild pitch.
