Football Caps 2021 Season With Loss At Concord

ATHENS, W.Va. – Quarterback Josh Jones accumulated more than 400 yards of total offense and nearly engineered a go-ahead drive in the last minute, but Concord forced six turnovers on the afternoon, including a fumble at the 8-yard line with 15 seconds left, to outlast the Braves, 28-25, on Saturday at Callaghan Stadium.

The setback snapped the lid on the 2021 season for the Braves (6-5) who finished in a tie for fourth in the final Mountain East Conference standings as well. The six victories is the most in five seasons for the Black & Gold who will return 14 starters for next season's campaign, including eight on offense.

It was the second-straight win for Concord (4-6) who improved to 4-4 all-time against the Braves, including a 3-1 mark against the Black & Gold at Callaghan Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
An fumble by the Braves deep in their own territory set up the first points of the day as Concord drove 18 yards in seven plays to take the early lead. Kevon Young-Warren handled a bulk of the offensive duties, carrying the ball five times for 17 yards, but quarterback Jack Mangel dove in from one yard out on fourth down to finish off the drive. CU 7, UNCP 0

An interception and ensuing return later in the quarter gave the hosts the ball near midfield, and they cashed in on the turnover again. Jack Mangel completed all three of his pass attempts for 34 yards, but Kevon Young-Warren ran it in from eight yards out to cap the touchdown drive. CU 14, UNCP 0

Devin Jones return the ensuing kickoff 52 yards to give the Braves their first good field position of the day, and they cashed in to get on the board. Josh Jones ran for 13 yards on a key second-down play, and completed a pair of passes for 19 yards, including a dazzling 8-yard strike to Trey Dixon. CU 14, UNCP 7
2ND QUARTER
The Braves took advantage of an interception and put together a 16-play, 75-yard scoring drive to even up the score midway through the second quarter. Josh Jones completed six of his seven pass attempts for 70 yards, including a 17-yard touchdown strike to C.J. Davis on 4th-and-3. Jones also ran for 16 yards on the possession. CU 14, UNCP 14
3RD QUARTER
An onside kick to start the second half backfired on the Mountain Lions as UNCP took its only lead of the afternoon on a 7-play, 45-yard scoring drive that was capped by a 30-yard field goal from Alex Alvarado. The drive was keyed by a 43-yard pass-and-catch from Josh Jones to Rodney Smith that set the visitors up in the red zone. UNCP 17, CU 14

Concord answered on the ensuing possession, capping an 11-play, 80-yard scoring drive with a 21-yard touchdown pass from Jack Mangel to Tywan Pearce. Mangel threw for 68 yards on 5-of-6 passing, while Justin Lee rushed for 13 yards on a pair of carries. CU 21, UNCP 17
