No. 8 Notre Dame Too Much For Football

PEMBROKE – Josh Jones capped the game's opening possession with a 4-yard touchdown pass to C.J. Davis, but visiting and eighth-ranked Notre Dame rattled off 45 unanswered points, including 21 in the final 3:12 of the second quarter, to power past the UNC Pembroke football team, 45-7, on Saturday afternoon at Grace P. Johnson Stadium.

The result snapped a four-game win streak for the Braves (6-4, 6-3 MEC) who capped the home portion of their 2021 regular season schedule with the setback as well. It was the fifth-straight victory for the Falcons (9-1, 8-1) who stayed in the hunt for the Mountain East Conference regular season championship.

THE BASICS
SCORE: #8 Notre Dame 45, UNC Pembroke 7
RECORDS: UNC Pembroke 6-4, 6-3 MEC; Notre Dame 9-1, 8-1 MEC
LOCATION: Pembroke, N.C. (Grace P. Johnson Stadium)
HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Josh Jones engineered a 12-play, 80-yard scoring drive on the game's opening possession, and the Braves stormed out front when the junior signal caller found C.J. Davis on a 4-yard scoring strike. UNCP 7, NDC 0
2ND QUARTER
After their first three possessions of the contest went for naught, the Falcons finally got off the mark with a 15-play, 70-yard drive in the second period that milked nearly 7-1/2 minutes off of the game clock. Idris Lawrence logged 11 rushing attempts on the possession, including a 1-yard touchdown dive on third down. UNCP 7, NDC 7

A controversial call swung the momentum on Notre Dame's side moments later. A first-down pass from Josh Jones was batted into the backfield and, amid the confusion, Guam Lee scooped up the loose ball and rumbled 32 yards for the go-ahead score. NDC 14, UNCP 7

An interception stopped the ensuing possession for the Braves and set the Falcons up for the final score of the stanza. Idris Lawrence turned in a 38-yard scamper on 2nd-and-17 from the 26-yard line, and quarterback Chris Brimm finished off the 7-play possession with a six-yard touchdown run. NDC 21, UNCP 7
3RD QUARTER
Notre Dame went to work near midfield on their second possession of the latter half, but the 9-play drive stalled inside the red zone. The Falcons would settle for a 36-yard field goal from Tanner Harding, however, to pad their lead out to three touchdowns. NDC 24, UNCP 7

A penalty on the ensuing kickoff pinned the Braves inside their own 10-yard line and, after holding the hosts to just five yards on second down, the Falcons would capitalize again. Bryce Sheppert dove in front of a punt attempt from Alex Hodge, and Davis Patterson pounced on the ball in the end zone. NDC 31, UNCP 7

A 3-and-out, coupled with a short punt, on the ensuing possession set the Falcons up again on UNCP's side of the gridiron minutes later. Chris Brimm would go to work for the visitors after that, completing four of his five pass attempts on the possession, including a 31-yard touchdown pass to C.J. Kiss. NDC 38, UNCP 7
4TH QUARTER
Another blocked punt early in the fourth quarter set the Falcons up for the game's final points. Idris Lawrence ran for 18 yards on second down, and then finished off the 28-yard scoring drive with a 4-yard touchdown run up the middle. NDC 45, UNCP 7
