BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – A career performance on the gridiron on Saturday led to even more fortune on Monday when junior quarterback
Josh Jones was decorated with Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors by the Mountain East Conference, the league office announced.
Jones, a Wilmington native and Hoggard High School product, threw for 350 yards and four touchdowns on 26-of-32 passing with one interception on Saturday as the Braves (1-0) cruised by Glenville State, 30-7, in their debut as an associate member of the MEC. Jones connected on touchdown passes of 35, 8 (twice) and 11 yards in the first three quarters alone, and completed passes to nine different receivers in the outing.
The signal caller's 81.3 completion rate marked the sixth-best passing day in program history, while his 350 yards passing ranks 14
th all-time in program annals. It was just the tenth time in the 14-year history of the program that a quarterback had registered four or more touchdown passes in a game.
Jones has played in 21 games over his 2+-year career in the Black & Gold, and has thrown for 4,267 yards on 408-of-672 (.607) passing with 32 touchdowns and just 13 interceptions. He needs just more than 1,100 more passing yards to move into third place among UNCP's all-time passing leaders.
The Braves will be back in action again on Saturday when they suit up to make their 2021 spring home debut against West Virginia Wesleyan (0-1) at Grace P. Johnson Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
