No. 16 Baseball Rallies To Thwart Augusta In Extra Frames

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Augusta drew a two-out walk to force in the game-tying run in the bottom of the eighth inning, but the 16th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team tacked up five runs in the top of the 11th inning to stave off an upset bid with a 7-4 victory over the Jaguars on Friday afternoon in northeast Georgia.

It was the 12th-straight victory for the Black & Gold (20-5, 16-3 PBC) who has now captured the opening game of 10 consecutive weekend league series dating back to last season. Augusta (4-18, 3-17) has now dropped six-straight outings.

KEY INNINGS
TOP 4 Spencer Faulkner and River Ryan each tallied singles to lead off the frame, and then took advantage of a pair of costly errors to eventually plate both runners. Faulkner crossed home plate on a dropped fly ball by the Augusta infield, and Christian Jayne pushed the lead out to 2-0 on a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
BOT 5 Trent Maddox singled to lead off the inning, and moved all the way over to third base moments later thanks to an ill-timed error by the UNCP infield. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Jose Nogueras trimmed the deficit in half for the hosts.
BOT 8 The Jaguars used a pair of singles and a bean ball to load the bases with two outs on the board, and knotted the score up when Skylor Murphy drew a walk to force the run in.
TOP 11 UNCP sent its entire batting order to the plate in a clutch 5-run 11th inning. Bobby Dixon put the Braves up for good on a RBI double, and Ramsey Petty delivered a pair of insurance runs with a 2-run single through the left side. The visitors pushed their advantage out to five runs, 7-2, via a sacrifice fly from both Wellington Guzman and Garrett Littleton.
