Volleyball Falls To Saint Leo, Eckerd At Valdosta State Invitational

September 10, 2021

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 VALDOSTA, Ga. – The UNC Pembroke volleyball team had its midweek momentum quelled on Friday afternoon on at the Valdosta State Invitational as the Braves dropped straight-set matches to both Saint Leo (21-25, 20-25, 23-25) and Eckerd (24-26, 22-25, 17-25) to open the two-day tournament.

The loss to the Lions (2-3) snapped a two-match win streak for the Braves (4-4) who swept through both Newberry and Winston-Salem State on Tuesday in Pembroke. It was the first-ever matchup for the Black & Gold against Saint Leo, while Eckerd (5-1) has captured all six matchups in the all-time series with the Braves. Friday evening's triumph was the fourth-straight victory of the 2021 campaign for the Tritons whose only setback this season came at the hands of then-No. 6 Lewis.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 21-25 The Braves took control early on, but Saint Leo hit an impressive .375 on the way to capturing the opening set. UNCP led 7-2 following a service ace from Elise Martin, but the Lions responded with a 7-2 run of their own to knot things up. The Black & Gold used an attack error to, again, take a one-point advantage, 18-17, later in the set, but Saint Leo finished it out with an 8-2 run to claim the set victory.
SET 2 I 20-25 UNCP registered five blocks and a service ace in the second set, but an early six-point deficit was too much to overcome. The Lions used Anna Garrett's kill to forge an 11-5 lead, but UNCP tacked up 10 of the next 11 points and eventually took a 15-12 advantage after a kill by Katelyn West. The Lions answered with an 8-2 run, however, to eventually take control of the match.
SET 3 I 23-25 Saint Leo took advantage of nine attack errors by the Braves in what would turn out to be the third and final set to close out the team victory. UNCP battled back from an early 5-1 deficit with five-straight points to take the lead, but the Lions answered with a 5-1 run and never trailed again. Margaret Schirm's kill late in the set gave Saint Leo a 22-17 advantage before the Braves put together a late rally that fell just short.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 24-26 The Braves logged a trio of service aces and 15 kills in the opening set, but the Tritons used a last-chance rally to claim the opening set. A kill from Morgan Gibbs handed the Black & Gold a 22-20 advantage, but Eckerd rallied for three-straight points to take the lead, 23-22. UNCP fought off a set-point opportunity to knot the score up at 24 points apiece, but the Tritons got consecutive kills from Ranya Mehta to claim the first stanza.
SET 2 I 22-25 Eckerd claimed four of the second set's first five points, but the Braves answered with four-straight points of their own to claim the advantage. The Tritons climbed back in front by as many as three points, 12-9, midway through, but the teams traded blows for much of the rest of the way out until the Braves tacked up three-straight points to grab a 22-21 lead. A set-tying service error knotted the score back up, however, and Eckerd closed out the stanza with a service ace, a kill and an attack error.
SET 3 I 17-25 The Tritons hit an impressive .323 in the third and final set and never trailed on the way to closing out the team victory. The squads split the first 16 points of the stanza before Eckerd used four-straight points to pull away for good. The Braves pulled to within one points, 13-12, following an attack error by the Tritons, but Eckerd tallied seven of the next eight points to all but seal the outcome.
