Baseball Splits Twinbill With IUP, Takes Series

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke baseball team tacked up a pair of early multi-run innings and held off a late charge by visiting IUP to post a 5-4 win in Saturday's opener, but the Crimson Hawks salvaged their weekend series with the Black & Gold via a 13-7 triumph in the nightcap.
 
Saturday's game one result, coupled with Friday evening's 9-5 win over the Crimson Hawks (1-2), helped UNCP (3-2) claim its first series victory of the season.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
BOT 1 Christian Jayne and Ethan Ott both singled to lead off the afternoon for the Braves and, after a wild pitch moved both players into scoring position, an RBI groundout by from Gage Hammonds gave the hosts the lead for good. Spencer Faulkner's RBI groundout, as well as a costly fielding error by the visitors, pushed the lead out to 3-0 heading to the second.
BOT 3 Ethan Ott singled, and Gage Hammonds drew a four-pitch walk to lead off the third for the Braves, and Bobby Dixon's RBI groundout moments later made it a 4-0 advantage. Spencer Faulkner's RBI single later in the frame capped the scoring for the Black & Gold.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 1 Markus Cestra led off the ballgame with a triple, and Peyton Johnson gave the visitors the lead for good on a RBI single moments later. Colton Burd made it a 2-0 game with a run-scoring double two batters later, and Torrey Roper's RBI single in the next at-bat pushed the advantage out to 3-0.
TOP 4 Nick Hess hit a 3-run homer to blow the game wide open, but Colton Burd followed with a solo blast two pitches later to pad the lead out to eight runs.
