Baseball Sweeps Saturday Double Dip With Chowan

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke baseball team tacked up a combined 26 hits and rallied back from deficits in both games to register a doubleheader sweep of Conference Carolinas foe Chowan on Saturday at Sammy Cox Field. The Braves posted a 16-6 rout in the opener, before toughing out a 9-6 victory in the nightcap.
 
The results marked the fourth- and fifth-straight wins for the Black & Gold (18-6, 10-1 CC) who has now tasted victory in 15 of its last 18 outings. The Hawks (5-17, 0-11) have now dropped nine-straight games, and stayed winless in league play with Saturday's outcomes as well.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
TOP 4 Chowan used a trio of hits and an untimely error to stretch its lead out to 6-2 in the fourth. Carrington Williams got the scoring started with a 2-out RBI single that pushed the advantage out to 4-2, and Dallas Trevena followed with a RBI double two at-bats later. A costly error in the outfield by the hosts capped the scoring in the frame.
BOT 5 UNCP loaded the bases with its first three at-bats in the fifth, and cut its deficit on half via a 2-run single from Andrew Mills. Owen Taylor brought in another run on a sacrifice fly to deep centerfield, and the Braves knotted the score up moments later when Wellington Guzman's hard grounder was misplayed by the infield which allowed Mills to trot home from third.
BOT 6 The Braves sent a dozen batters to the plate in a 7-run sixth inning that completely swung the momentum. Four different players produced run-scoring at-bats in the frame, including a grand slam by Wellington Guzman.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 3 The first two Hawks in the third went down without a fight, but Tyler West drew a 5-pitch walk, stole second base and eventually scored on a two-out single from Emanuel Betancourt. Chowan used its next two at-bats to load the bases, and took a short-lived lead on a bases-loaded walk.
BOT 3 Ethan Ott and Bobby Dixon tacked up back-to-back one-out singles to get something going for the hosts, and Andrew Mills knotted the game back up on a run-scoring single up the middle. A pair of ill-timed fielding errors by the Hawks led to two more runs crossing the plate.
