Baseball Sweeps Twinbill At Belmont Abbey, Takes Series

BELMONT – The UNC Pembroke baseball team combined for 26 hits on the afternoon, and put crooked numbers on the board in seven different frames on the way to a doubleheader sweep at Belmont Abbey on Saturday afternoon at Abbey Yard. The Braves posted an 11-8 victory in the front half of the twinbill, and used an offensive explosion to tally a 17-5 triumph in the nightcap.
 
Saturday's wins gave the Black & Gold (20-8, 13-2 CC) its fifth conference series win of the season, and marked the fourth and fifth wins in the last six series matchups with the Crusaders. The setbacks marked just the third and fourth home losses of the season for Belmont Abbey (20-10, 11-5).

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
BOT 4 Belmont Abbey erased a 3-0 deficit with one swing of the bat as Kale Rhame smacked a two-strike offering from Branden Kunz over the wall in right field.
TOP 5 UNC Pembroke swung the momentum for good by sending its entire batting order to the plate and plating six runs with two outs showing on the scoreboard. Christian Jayne gave the Black & Gold the lead for good on a two-run single to centerfield, while Andrew Mills dealt the biggest blow with a three-run homer to left field.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
BOT 2 Connor Tucker singled to lead off the frame, moved into scoring position on a balk and eventually gave the Crusaders their second lead of the contest when he scored on a groundout to the left side of the infield.
TOP 3 Ethan Ott reached via a one-out single, moved into position on a wild pitch and eventually knotted the game back up off of Christian Jayne's run-scoring single. Gage Hammonds followed with a RBI double to give the Braves their first lead of the game, and Trent Harris pushed the advantage out to a pair of runs on a RBI single in the next at-bat.
