MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Joshua Chepkesir claimed the first individual title for the UNC Pembroke track & field teams, while
Raigan Evans registered a pair of third-place finishes on the opening day of the Conference Carolinas Championships on Friday at the Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.
After six scored events, the men's team is in second place with 39 points and trail North Greenville who leads the men's division with 44 points. The women's team is positioned in sixth place with 21 points with Mount Olive currently holding a hefty lead with 54 points.
Chepkeisr stood on top of the podium with the final race of the opening day in the 100000m Run. The senior crossed the finish line in 31:20.77 on the way to the gold medal.
Norman Junker earned all-conference honors in the 10000-meter Run as well picking up a third place finish with a time of 32:33.38.
Tayvon Callahan recorded an NCAA provisional time in the prelims of the 110m Hurdles with a personal-best time of 14.21, while
Ben Oxendine logged a big personal-best mark in Javelin Throw on the way to a fourth place finish.
On the women's side, Evans started the competition with a third place showing in the Javelin Throw with a personal-best mark of 38.01m. The redshirt senior also earned a third place finish in the Hammer Throw with a personal-best throw of 49.79m.
Jaela Thomas placed third in the prelims of the 200m Dash and will look to earn a podium spot on Saturday in the finals. Newcomers Nyree Bacchus (400m Dash) and
Mahala Evans (100m Dash) will also look have a good performance in the finals of their respective events after recorded personal-best times in the prelims.
The top three finishers in each event final earn first, second, and third team all-conference accolades.
The Braves will close out competition at the Conference Carolinas Championships on Saturday at the Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.
