No. 22 Football Dominates Shorter For Homecoming

PEMBROKE - The 22nd-ranked UNC Pembroke football team scored on its first three offensive possessions to start the game to set the tone early and key a 52-21 victory over Shorter on Saturday afternoon at Grace P. Johnson Stadium for homecoming. 

The Braves (6-1, 3-0 CC) have now won their last six games and improve to a perfect 4-0 when playing in Pembroke. The Hawks (1-6, 0-3 CC) have now lost their last three games and fall to 0-4 when playing on the road.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
UNC Pembroke started strong in the first quarter against Shorter, quickly establishing momentum with a 12-yard rush by Malik Brown. Tre Robinson's 47-yard touchdown pass to Que Kennedy at the 12:08 mark put the Braves on the scoreboard, followed by a successful extra point from Taylor Harris. With 5:50 remaining, Tre Robinson connected again, this time with JaQuan Albright for a 28-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 14–0. Tre Robinson capped the quarter with a 1-yard rushing touchdown with 37 seconds left, and another extra point from Taylor Harris brought the score to 21–0 for the Braves.
2ND QUARTER
UNC Pembroke extended their lead with a solid offensive effort and strong defensive plays. At 3:18, Taylor Harris successfully converted a 29-yard field goal, pushing the score to 24–0. Later, Tre Robinson connected with Que Kennedy for a 4-yard touchdown pass with 42 seconds remaining, and Taylor Harris added the extra point for a 31–0 advantage. Shorter's offense struggled to maintain momentum, highlighted by a costly fumble by Jeb Walls recovered by Jadin Baptist, stalling their drive at the UNCP 44-yard line.
3RD QUARTER
In the third quarter, UNC Pembroke extended their lead with a strong defensive play. At 13:44, Justin Foreman intercepted a pass from Jeb Walls and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown. Taylor Harris successfully added the extra point to tack onto the large lead. The Hawks responded with Carlos Mann's 37-yard rushing touchdown at 11:58, with Edgar Bermudez converting the extra point to make it 38-7. Later in the quarter, Tre Robinson connected with Malik Brown for a 74-yard touchdown pass at 3:58, followed by another successful kick by Taylor Harris to give the Braves a 45-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter. 
4TH QUARTER
Shorter narrowed the deficit with a 4-yard touchdown run by Lanear McCrary Jr. at 14:09, followed by a successful extra point from Edgar Bermudez, making the score 45–14. The Braves responded immediately when Jordan Marcucci returned the ensuing kickoff 89 yards, setting up a 5-yard touchdown run by Marcus Martin at 13:50, extending the UNCP to 52–14. The Hawks managed to add another touchdown with 2:19 remaining, again through Lanear McCrary Jr., who ran 5 yards into the end zone. Edgar Bermudez's extra point concluded the scoring at 52–21. UNC Pembroke maintained control for the remainder of the game, with Cedric Jordan's 26-yard rush highlighting their final drive before Marcus Martin took a knee to run out the clock.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Tre Robinson completed 17 of his 23 passing attempts for 296 yards and four touchdowns. The sophomore ran the ball 16 times for 65 yards and one rushing touchdown as well.
+ Que Kennedy caught seven passes for 118 yards including two touchdowns.
+ Malik Brown caught a pair of passes, highlighted by a 74-yard touchdown pass. 
+ Justin Foreman finished with eight tackles, 2.5 tackles for a loss of three yards, and had one interceptions for a 30-yard touchdown. 
+ Jadin Baptist finished with a team-high 14 tackles, eight of which were solo tackles. Baptist recovered a fumble and had one tackle for a loss of two yards. 
NOTABLES
 + UNC Pembroke improves to 16-2 all-time when playing on homecoming and have won the last 10 homecoming contests.
+ The Black & Gold scored touchdowns on their first three possessions, and ended the first half scoring on 5-of-6 of their possessions for the half. 
+ Shorter was held to just one passing yard during Saturday's contest. Meanwhile, the Braves threw for 326 yards. 

+ It is the best start to a season since the Braves went 6-1 through their first seven games during the 2016 season.

The Braves will travel to Tigerville, S.C., on Saturday to face North Greenville. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at Younts Stadium.
