Pearce Named Assistant AD For Communications & Strategic Initiatives

September 29, 2026

PEMBROKE – Athletics department officials at The University of North Carolina Pembroke announced on Tuesday that Alex Pearce has been elevated to Assistant AD for Communications & Strategic Initiatives.

Pearce spent the last three years as Assistant Athletic Communications Director and also served eight years as an assistant baseball coach for the Braves, and will lead the athletic communications efforts for the department.

"This promotion is a well-deserved recognition of the leadership, professionalism, and commitment that Alex has consistently brought to our athletics department," said Director of Athletics, Scott Byrd. "His experience with UNCP, institutional knowledge, and passion for telling the stories of our student-athletes makes him a slam dunk to lead our Athletic Communications team. We are excited to see him take this next step and continue making a tremendous impact for the Black & Gold."

A Rocky Mount native, Pearce was a defensive standout for the Braves, compiling nearly 600 putouts and committing just 11 errors in 669 career defensive chances while throwing out 45% of base stealers. He played in 105 games over his four-year career in the Black & Gold, including 45 games behind the dish in UNCP's run to the 2011 Peach Belt Conference Tournament title, as well as the first NCAA postseason berth in school history. Pearce hung up his catcher's mitt in favor of a spot on the mound as a senior, making 13 starts for the Braves in 2012 and logging a team-best eight wins (8-4) and a 3.86 ERA, while also striking out 54 batters in 86.1 innings of work. All told, he helped the Braves to nearly 400 wins (391-194) during his playing and coaching tenure in Pembroke.

"I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to step into this role at UNC Pembroke," said Pearce. "Heading into year 16 in some capacity at UNCP, this university has become a special part of who I am, and I'm honored to continue serving our student-athletes, coaches, and department in this new position. I'm thankful for the people who have invested in and taken chances on me throughout my career, and I'm excited for what the future holds as we continue to shine the light on UNC Pembroke Athletics and our student-athletes."

Pearce graduated with his bachelor's degree in physical education from UNC Pembroke in 2012 and earned his master's degree in sport administration from UNC Pembroke in 2017.
