NEWBERRY, S.C. – Christian McLean had his bid for a perfect day turned away in the championship bout of the 285-pound bracket en route to runner-up honors, while Joe Remaklus (165 pounds) and Juan Stimpson (174) each came away with third place laurels to highlight action for the 25th-ranked UNC Pembroke wrestling team on Saturday at the Newberry Open.
It was the fourth top-6 finish of the season for McLean who had already captured third place honors at three previous tournaments heading into the weekend. Stimpson finished among a tournament's top 6 for the third time this season, while Saturday's performance gave Remaklus his first place-winner accolades of the campaign.
McLean sliced through his first three opponents of the day in the heavyweight division, but NC State's Mike Kosoy proved to be too much for him in the finals. McLean had punched his ticket to the championship match less than an hour earlier with an 8-4 decision over Appalachian State's P.J. Shuler.
Remaklus dropped his opening match of the 165-pound tournament to The Citadel's Cory Burres, but rebounded with five-straight victories in the consolation bracket, including a trio of bonus point wins. He would cap his day with a tight 2-1 decision over host-Newberry's Dennis Flores in the third place bout.
Stimpson won his first three matches of the day as well, but fell to Appalachian State's Nick Kees in the championship semifinal round by a 7-1 decision. Stimpson would answer the setback with three victories in the consolation bracket, including a pin of Duke's Randy Roden and an 8-5 decision over Cumberland's Kyle Delaune in the third place match.
Seven Braves recorded at least two wins on the day, including a team-best six by Stimpson. Josh Brown, Tyler Ross, Jake Smith and Dakota Roberts each tallied a pair of wins as well.
UNCP (10-4) will be back in action again on Tuesday when the Braves close out their 2013-14 home schedule with a dual meet against third-ranked Newberry (17-1) in the English E. Jones Center. Match time has been set for 7 p.m. and admission is free.
